I have a 10 gun Field & Stream gin safe, and, just like TREEMAN explained, it binds. With the door open or closed, the handle moves freely to the open position, but VERY hard to move to the closed position.
I removed the inner panel from the door and found that the problem is really a design shortcoming. The top two lugs are actuated directly by the handle, while the bottom lug is moved in and out by a long piece of angle iron connecting it to the handle mechanism. Play in the system and flexing of the angle iron bar causes the bottom lug to get pushed back and forth with a bit of misalignment, causing it to bind in the plastic bushing it slides back and forth in.
The solution was to clean all the lubricant off the lug - which was contributing to the binding, and giving it a spritz of silicone spray lube. Now, it works perfectly.
An alternative fix would be to remove the lug completely (it's held on with one large locking nut), which would compromise security a little bit, or remove the plastic bushing, allowing more clearance for the lug to move freely. For me, the silicone spray did the trick and you could probably clean the lug and spray it well enough without removing the panel.
